Deeksha is a leading Kathak dance institution in Albuquerque, New Mexico, devoted to preserving and advancing this timeless classical art. Founded in 2022 by Prof. Sreyashi Chakravarty, a distinguished Kathak dancer and educator, Deeksha provides a supportive, inspiring space where students of all ages can absorb Kathak’s rhythm, grace, and storytelling.

Nestled in New Mexico’s high desert yet firmly rooted in the traditions of Indian Classical Dance Kathak, Deeksha’s core philosophy is two‑fold: nurture every student’s artistic journey and serve the wider community through culture and education. We honor the rigor and lineage of Kathak while making the form accessible through expert instruction, engaging workshops, and vibrant performances. The Inspiration behind Deeksha

Deeksha is the result of a deeply felt inspiration and a heartfelt homage to Sreyashi Chakravarty’s two gurus, Guru Shanta Chakraborty, the first Kathak dance disciple of Guru Rani Karnaa, and a Dakshinee-trained vocalist, and Padma Shri Guru Rani Karnaa, the Kathak luminary rooted in both Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas of Kathak. Sreyashi’s gurus instilled in her a guiding principle: share your art, nurture the next generation, and give back to the community. That vision, the gurus’ blessings passed on, is the heartbeat of Deeksha, an institute created as both a tribute and a conduit of service.

Reviving her mother’s academy name, Deeksha in Albuquerque is Sreyashi’s param sadhana, a Sanskrit term that signifies the highest dedicated pursuit, offered as a living thank you to her students and the wider community.
